Inspired by Jerome Robbins' earlier ballet Fancy Free, On The Town brilliantly dramatized the adventures of three sailors in New York on a 24-hour pass. Robbins' driving creative vision as both director and choreographer on this show and his West Side Story (1957) planted the seeds for the so called "concept musical," such as "Cabaret" (1966) and "Chicago" (1975).

Call Me Madam September 8, 1950
The rehearsal for the Broadway hit comedy with dances by Jerome Robbins, Directed by George Abbott, and with music by Irving Berlin. The show starred Ethel Merman in the lead role of Ms. Sally Adams, the U.S. Ambassador to Lichtenburg, who upon her arrival immediately falls for Lichtenburger Cosmo Constantine. The show was later made into a film, also starring Ethel Merman.
