She became his instructor at The Juilliard School and propelled him to fame in 1958 with his win in the inaugural International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The win caught the attention of the nation and he was given a ticker tape parade in New York and shared the top of the charts with the likes of the soundtrack to South Pacific and Johnny Mathis.
